Wash day for many naturalistas is one of the most important days in the natural hair care world. For me, my wash day is fun, but it can be quite stressful because my hair is thick so it needs sufficient time. I’m not complaining though because I signed up for this. My last wash day which was two days ago, I learned a lot of things I will NOT be doing. Never ever again,(I’ll be sharing in another post).
I decided to pre-poo my hair first to reduce tangling and most importantly avoid loss of natural hair oil thereby retaining moisture. I also I tired out the green tea rinse for the very first time, this also helps reduce breakage. I intend to infuse this into my hair regimen for the purpose of retaining length.
pree-poo simply means applying an oil treatment to your hair prior to shampooing or conditioning. There are lots of home made pree poo recipes, but I decided to go for the banana mask. To prepare this, you’ll need two ripe bananas and about two table spoons of coconut oil and of course a blender. If you don’t have a blender, I will advice that you opt for the avocado mask. Preparing a banana mask without a blender is one of the mistakes I’m never going to make again in all my natural hair journey 😥.
How to prepare: Blend bananas until it becomes completely smooth. Pour banana mask into a bowl and add coconut oil and mix away.
How to use: Section your hair into four or two parts, depending on how thick your hair is, slowly massage mask into scalp, apply on the hair focusing on the ends of your hair. Do this on all sides of your hair until your hair is completely covered with the mask. Cover hair with a plastic bag (shower cap), and leave on for 30 minutes.
Green Tea Rinse
While your hair is still prepooing, boil some water and add two bags of green tea in the hot boiling water. Allow the tea to cool. I used Qualitea because that was the cheapest I could find 😂.
How to use: Rinse out banana mask after 30 minutes with warm water, ensure your hair is completely banana free. I couldn’t find my spritz bottle so I poured the green tea gently on my hair and massaged into scalp. I repeated the same process until my hair was completely covered with green tea. I left it on my hair for about 10 minutes, for better results, you cover your hair with plastic bag.
After 10 minutes, rinse out.
This is the part we don’t fancy so much. I used my design essentials rose mary and mint stimulating conditioner to detangle because I love the minty feel on my scalp, gosh it’s so good. It’s not a natural hair products but the ingredients are safe for my hair. I finger detangle because my hair hates tools. If you must use a tool, use a wide tooth comb to make the work easier.
Shampoo or co wash. I used my my Palmers
conditioning shampoo to wash out all the banana residue and build up in my scalp by massaging shampoo gently into my scalp. Try as much as possible to avoid shampooing your hair, your aim is to get your scalp sqeeky clean. If your hair isn’t so dirty, Co-washing would be fine.
Apply conditioner into hair and detangle further if any knots still exist. There wasn’t much to detangle, so just draped all my hair in conditioner. used my Palmers coconut oil formula repairing conditioner, the very last of it 😭, and rinsed it out with warm water.
If you want to see a difference in your hair texture and the overall health if your curls, girl you gotta DEEP CONDITION. I did a post on the basics of deep conditioning and all the goodness of it. Click here to read.
Normally I deep condition my hair with my Eden body works hair mask for about 1-2 hours, but almost all my products are exhausted 😭. I was able to properly manage them for a year and two months, I bought a few things in between but nothing major since August 2016. On the brighter side, I’m pretty excited because I can finally shop for new products, lol black Friday is close 💃.What products do you recommend I try?
Wondered how I started out on this natural hair journey without breaking my bank account? This post going to be very helpful.
Rinse out out hair mayonnaise if you deep conditioned. I didn’t, so I went ahead to moisturize my hair by applying my coconut oil and Cantu leave in conditioner while I put my hair in twists.
My hair became completely fluffy and moisturized. My curl pattern became more defined. I also noticed my hair had a different kind of shine to it because of the banana mask. Although I had some breakage due to a few mistakes I made (watch out for post) but regardless I absolutely loved the result.
And do you always pree poo your hair, have you ever tried the green tea rinse? What was your experience?
Happy November 🌸
