Hey guys, so we made it to the end of 2018. I’m so thankful to everyone who has been following my blog, liking and sharing. Wouldn’t have made it this far without your support, i’m so grateful. So today i’ll be sharing something I have dealt with, I didn’t even know it was a thing when I first experienced it until someone talked about it on social media. What we call ‘Impostor Syndrome’ according to psychologists.
According to wikipedia, impostor syndrome is a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a “fraud”. Despite external evidence of their competence, those experiencing this phenomenon remain convinced that they are frauds, and do not deserve all they have achieved.
Have you ever felt like your life is a lie, especially when good things are happening to you? Have you ever felt like a fraud because you lowkey feel your accomplishments happened based on luck and without any real effort? Do you look at your colleagues, classmates or even your friends and feel like you do not belong there and one day they’ll probably discover you’re not who you say you are even though you are, and you have physical evidence ?
If you’ve ever felt this way, you are not alone. An article written by the Journal of Behavioural science reports that about 70% of people experience impostor syndrome at some point in their lives. That’s a lot of people! All these articles written by psychologists have a lot of these explanations as to why people feel this way, I’m not here to counter their views because quite frankly they may be right. However as a christian and someone who lives her life based on God’s word and godly principles, I believe any thing that makes you feel fear for whatever reason is not from God and is definitely not of God.
Think about it, something good happens to you, and now you’re suddenly feeling afraid that you do not deserve it or its probably just luck and world will eventually see that you’re just a ‘fraud’. Do y’all see that the devil is very stupid? They call it an ‘internalised fear’, Fear in whatever form or definition is fear and it is a spirit that must be cast out.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind – 2 Timothy 1:7 (kjv).
You need to see ‘Impostor Syndrome’ for what it really is. This is fear spiced up with a fancy name. If you’ve ever felt this way or you currently even feel this way, you don’t have to believe it. Knowing it for what it really is will help you believe what is true. So next time you feel this way, ask yourself these questions; am I a fraud? Is this true? When you have your answer, discard these thoughts and dwell on is true.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things – Philippians 4:8
What you think about affects how you think and eventually affects your actions, and we all know that what you think about becomes who you are, because as a man thinks so is he. I remember the first time I ever felt this was in secondary school. I had participated in a pageant to be crowned queen of my school. To be honest, I didn’t think I was going to win, I just wanted to have fun, and do something different for once, but I did win, I brought my best and I won. I was happy, but there was that feeling of maybe ‘someone else deserved it.’ No sis! You deserved it ( this is me talking to my 16 year old self).
This also continued even when I was in Uni, especially times when I had outstanding academic achievements. You feel like you’re surprised at your own success even when you prayed and worked hard towards it, like you weren’t really expecting it to happen? See, this fear is a liar. The bible says that God has given us all things richly to enjoy.
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment – 1 Timothy 6:17 (kjv)
So God wants you to enjoy ( as the original chief enjoyment officer that He is lol ☺️) He wants you to live a happy and fulfilled life, so don’t act surprised when good things happen to you, you deserve love, you deserve that job, you deserve a good life, you deserve to be saved and you deserve to be happy. Jesus did not die for you to reject goodness, God forbid. So if you’re going through this, start speaking speaking Gods word over your life, speak words of life and the things you want to see happen. Speak it until you believe it, however this starts from knowing who you are in Christ. If you used to be a sinner, and you’re now in Christ and the devil comes with that fake guilt card, you can shove it in His face. Don’t keep quiet, write it in your journal, hang it on the walls of your room and when those feelings surface subject them under the authority of Christ Jesus. Yes you have authority, use it and it will obey!
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ – 2 Corinthians 10:5
To conclude this write up ( finally 😂 ) there is something I started doing in 2017, and I’ve seen amazing results. I have very personalised declarations/affirmations I say to myself at least more than twice a week ( daily would be better). I break them down into various aspects of my life, for example; I have one for my career, relationship, business, family etc and under each I write specific words based on Gods word and what he has said about them and declare them. Sort of like prayers but bold declaration of the things I want to see in my life. So I’m encouraging you to do same, it will help. If you want more information on this, let me know in the comment section, I will be glad to help.
I hope this post blessed you, thank you for reading!
Contributions, thoughts and questions are welcomed. If you’ve had impostor syndrome before, how did you handle it?
